Ireland U21 25-42 S Africa U21
Gareth Steenson kicked 20 points for Ireland U21
Ireland threw away a second half lead to eventually lose 42-25 to South Africa in their final U21 World Cup pool game in Argentina on Friday.
Dungannon number 8 Stephen Ferris went over for Ireland's only try while clubmate and Irish captain Gareth Steenson kicked the other 20 points.
Ireland led 18-13 at the break and were 25-20 ahead during the second half but the Boks produced a late surge to win.
The Irish could be in the ninth-12th classification after the defeat.
Losing 27-25 against the pre-tournament favourites as the game went into the closing stage, Ireland conceded 15 points to give the young Boks a rather flattering victory.
Outhalf Gareth Steenson was at his best on place kicking, finding his range from anywhere on the pitch - his best effort being a 53-metre blast.
However, he did shave the wrong side of an upright with a 70th minute effort in front of the posts, which at that point would have given the young Greens a 28-27 lead.
Steenson kicked penalties in the fourth and sixth minutes, but Ireland went behind 7-6 to a converted try on eight minutes.
The nip and tuck affair continued, Steenson kicking Ireland into a 12-7 lead, South African coming back with two penalties to lead 13-12, before Steenson gave Ireland an 18-13 interval lead with a brace himself.
Yellow cards in the first half for Kevin McLaughlin and Ryan Caldwell in the second did not deter the Irish.
Ferris went over for a try, converted by Steenson, to leave the Irish leading 25-20 at one point in the second half, but the Boks scored a goal on 55 minutes.
And although there were two points in it going into the closing stages, a drop goal, two tries and a conversion gave the Boks the win which secures their semi-final place.
