True, great player and captain.Bogbunny wrote:Snipe Watson wrote:Coaching experience is vital in 95% of cases and under normal circumstances I would say it's a non-negotiable.Cockatrice wrote:He proved himself a great player but as yet has no coaching experience.. not what we need no matter what the Ruan effect..
Ruan is not normal circumstances.
You get players who you just know are visionary and get the nuances of the game on a different level to normal mortals. Gregor Townsend was one and Ruan is of the same ilk.
On the other hand, Martin Johnston, a greater player than both, was a disaster as coach.
It's about individuals with their particular skill set.

Re: Replacement 10
To be fair the Johnson appointment was made out of arrogance in thinking they had some of the best players in the world, all they needed was someone to motivate who would tell them they had to go out and play the game they thought they would be good enough to win without any master plan, at that point I dont think they were looking for a master “visionary” as you saySnipe Watson wrote:True, great player and captain.Bogbunny wrote:Snipe Watson wrote:Coaching experience is vital in 95% of cases and under normal circumstances I would say it's a non-negotiable.Cockatrice wrote:He proved himself a great player but as yet has no coaching experience.. not what we need no matter what the Ruan effect..

Unfortunately for Johnson he clearly couldnt translate the skills needed as a captain to those needed as a coach
Chris Henry is superhuman... I think he's half cyborg

So when I fill in the paperwork to run out for Old Wānktonians 7ths. Does it go to Dublin and if so, is there even any sort of approval. Back in the day, we just played and if we got around to registering before the end of the season, we were doing well. OK things are stricter now, but iirc you just register and play, you don't wait for approval.rumncoke wrote:maybe but the provinces report to D4

I remember old W@nktonians, their player registrations were filled out on tissue paper.

Indo reporting gibbes might bring pj with him to NZ. Be a good move for a season, then perhaps pick up a s15 contract.

If PJ makes to to NZ and plays for 1-2 years it has the potential to make him a better player than he ever may have become here. Natural talent, with some of that SH flare.jean valjean wrote:Indo reporting gibbes might bring pj with him to NZ. Be a good move for a season, then perhaps pick up a s15 contract.

I wonder if we could ever sign him again.
