Being a stickler for accuracy I have contacted Geoff Webb, Chief Executive of the Institute of Groundsmanship. This organisation is a body which works with groundsmen & weemen not only in the sporting field in GB & Ireland, but in Royal Parks, many stately homes & public gardens.

I asked him whether groundsmen in sporting stadia would prefer a naturally turfed pitch or are they happy with the roll out stuff. He gave me an unequivocal natural pitch preference as expected, considerably more durable & of better quality but requiring the right conditions, usually not a problem except in certain stadia.

I asked about the roll out turf on pallets in several large stadia and if groundsmen would prefer a natural pitch he said, & I quote, "No groundsman would prefer the rolled sods but many large stadia do not lend themselves to natural pitches. The roof in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium for example completely rules out the possibility of a permanent pitch and other fully enclosed stadia have issues both with lack of air circulation and in many cases the nature of the stadium roof."

The Japanese have a few of those.

Kind of tricky finding somewhere to "park" the pitch at Lansdowne Road or Ravers.

Assume that will be the "pitch on pallets" idea? Remains to be seen if the Stadium looks like anything, both Wembley & the Aviva do little for me.

The Millennium remains unsurpassed in terms of design, bank sharply upwards rather than sloping back gently so the higher you get the more you need your opera glasses.
