for backs it basically about passing and developing special plays which is not coaching but practice and practice and more practice.

Also kicking and catching practice, practice and practice doesn't require coaching
It also helps if your built and conditioned like you play Pro rugby rather than softball

We're pulling things together over the last few posts.
Strength and conditioning really matter.
Basic skills such as catching, passing, kicking and tackling really matter.
Having the right attitude and appropriate aggression really matter.
Playing as a well co-ordinated team really matters.
None of this is rocket science!

I see the Grant leaves by mutual consent - I always read that as "feck off".

Perhaps I haven't been paying close enough attention but I have always felt that RG never really delivered the goods in terms of how our forwards performed. I know we may not have a wealth of talent but it always seemed to be wasted rather than improved.

It was noticeable when Vermulen left, how our maul went to pieces.

No surprise and I'm glad Murphy is cleaning house. Grant never convinced me he was making the best of our talent, nor improving our cubs. A lot of the basics we were poor at, which stinks of lack discipline, professionalism and indeed often repetition on the training pitch.

S&C next I hope...

We were also worked out and maul defence has caught up by and large, but I agree we also seemed to lack previous coherence

Losing DV wasn’t likely to help the maul.

You’d imagine that Roddy wouldn’t have been kept around for as long as he has unless he was at least doing some good stuff.

Nick Timoney, for one, has obviously improved over the five years and the pack, generally speaking, tend to make their tackles if not always especially forcibly.

The bloke himself looks in much better shape than most of our players.

Having a relative that played in a Schools Cup Final at some stage in the past 50 years really matters too.

Even more so if they scored the winning try or drop goal.

They put a stronger spring on the door to the gym and he couldn't open it.

Wee Dave found him sobbing and he just fell apart when Shanners opened it with ease.

UR has a history of allowing staff to overstay their welcome. We've also had some good players at our disposal in the forwards over the last 5 years still we were relying on the likes of DVM and MC to add backbone and nous.

I don't think you can argue our set pieces and maul turned to sand. Literally indefensible as they are the basics of any forwards coaching set up- like I said, much of it basics through hard work and repetition so it becomes muscle memory.
Our packs were as soft as butter. Least the likes of MCann, Sheridan look like they had some steel in them. It needs to be in you, but good coaching can make it a strength. Issy seems to have it too.

Timoney had it innately and exposure brought his talent through imo.

Our successful mauls tended to have VM and marty moore at the front to stop any initial counter drive. We had neither for most of last year and the difference shone. Hopefully Duffy will bring some new ideas to our forwards work, I didn't see a role for both him and grant going forward.
