Re: Any word on the Academy?
Joe Mawhinney was the highly rated prop at this age grade, he has been playing loosehead, but looks well down the depth chart at ireland u20 level.

James mccormick and Reuben Crothers will both have good careers with Ulster.kingofthehill wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 7:01 pmI reckon 2 will come through.HammerTime wrote:

Everyone knows about Crothers but trust me, Mccormick is an unbelievable talent- Really physical and one of the most skilful players you’ll find in the academy system

Having said that, when Matty Rea can get over 50 caps there is hope for most people.

Not particularly to be honest. Some decent but don’t know how many I see been seasoned professionals.Bayern wrote:not a fan of the talent coming through?kingofthehill wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 10:47 pmFairly grim looking at that.Bayern wrote:Academy prospects:

Even tho the representation at Ireland u20 has been poor over the last number of years I have felt the talent was better than the current crop who are well represented.

I dunno, of those players listed only McCormick looks to be 1st choice for Ireland U20 this year, several are u19 so have time..kingofthehill wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 9:18 amNot particularly to be honest. Re: Any word on the Academy?
My views on prospects nave been voiced frequently
Given retirements and off loads from the Professional squad would average about 4 -5 a year that means only 4-6 are needed to replace those players and not all replacements will be home grown thus the numbers into the Academy is not the be-all and end--all what is necessary is a few players of quality .
Players with attitude as well as skill players with brains as well as brawn .
Very few forwards hit the ground running and have the makings of a professional before the age 23 for them it is a basically a long slog requiring a lot of hard work . Backs seem to make the squad sooner because those in squad become prone to injury(long term ) more often than forwards .
Thus looking at players coming into the Academy is seldom indicative of who will or will not make the contract at the end, for me it is all down to attitude and determination ( do the lads coming into the Academy have those attributes )

Within this carapace of skepticism there lives an optimist

Carson and postlewaithe would start at 12 & 13 if fit and available. McCormick and Carothers up front.Bayern wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 10:23 amI dunno, of those players listed only McCormick looks to be 1st choice for Ireland U20 this year, several are u19 so have time..kingofthehill wrote: ↑Fri Jan 07, 2022 9:18 amNot particularly to be honest. postlewaithe would start somewhere in the backline more than likely, dunno about carson.
