Loyalists told Charles Haughey MI5 ‘asked us to execute you’

Charles Haughey was told by loyalist paramilitaries 30 years ago that MI5 had ordered his assassination, declassified state papers show.

Records from his office while he was taoiseach in 1987 reveal that the UVF wrote to him to tell him that British intelligence also launched a smear campaign against him.

The loyalists claimed their organisation was used by MI5 and MI6, backed up by British army special forces, from 1972 to 1978 and again in 1985.

“In 1985 we were approached by a MI5 officer attached to the NIO (Northern Ireland Office) and based in Lisburn, Alex Jones was his supposed name,” the UVF said.

“He asked us to execute you.”

The previously secret letter, on UVF headed paper, showed the loyalists told Mr Haughey that the MI5 operative gave details of his cars, photographs of his home, his island, Inishvickillane, and his yacht, Celtic Mist.

“We refused to do it, we were asked would we accept responsibility if you were killed we refused,” the UVF said in the letter.

Signed in block capitals “Capt W Johnston”, the name used by the UVF in all its formal statements, it closed with the line: “We have no love for you but we are not going to carry out work for the Dirty Tricks Department of the British.” - PA

Hmmmm. Interesting. There was no need for them to make the claim that they were used by the British as this is already a matter of public record. Many loyalist and republican murders are actually British State murders. I do like the last line though. It seems that even the loyalists know how depraved the British intelligence services are. Not sure about the Haughey thing though. Not sure if Britain would have had reason to expire him and even if they did I'd imagine they would have used someone else to carry out such a high profile murder.
Strikes me as disingenuous, why would the UVF have the slightest interest in telling Haughey, where is the gain from their end? I doubt this was routine correspondence on a regular basis so why tell him, that is the key and I haven’t a clue where the key is never mind the lock it opens. Too long ago.

Interestingly the Brits appear to have dropped a bomb on that nice Mr Adams, alleging he set up an IRA unit for massacre. Again, where is the logic?

Partly a generational thing. Younger voters don't have the same associations.

Also the time honoured tribal card. SF are now seen as the only party who can challenge DUP dominance (you could also ask why the ppl who voted UU turned against them and voted for that shower of equally despicable barstewards).

The logic as I have heard it is that there was allegedly some in-fighting within the RA - which obviously Gerry was never in, but some thought he was - and those boyos who were (allegedly) set up by Adams at Loughgall had allegedly intended a similar fate for him.

Gerry allegedly used the SAS to take down his internal enemies within the organisation he was (not even allegedly) never a part of.

I could be completely (and allegedly) wrong though.

The ra boss in Loughgall would not have been on for a political resolution and his boss in turn was deposed and succeeded by Thomas Slab Murphy as the IRA were winding down to follow the political route.
I have never heard the Adams suggestion before but it most certainly would be possible as someone set them up and several lose ends were sorted out by that all

Yip, I subsequently read about it and you can understand the logic. Whether you believe it or not is a different matter. Could be.

I never knew P O'Neill to use headed notepaper.

Unless maybe the scaffolders that supplied Ravers before it turned into Kingspan use it?

For someone who thinks nothing of using Hunger Strikers to obtain votes a few dead members would only strengthen that vote
