Any chance of the IRFU allowing an injury replacement for Coetzee

Love it if the man regained full fitness but is it not asking a heck of a lot to have a ACL repair repaired, my own personal opinion is same as you CT, chuck in the towel now.

Ulster director of rugby Les Kiss says they will "stick by" Marcell Coetzee after the South Africa flanker was ruled out for nine months following a further knee operation.

The 26-year-old forward returned to his homeland for treatment on a ligament problem which has restricted his appearances for Ulster to just five games - with just one outing this season - since joining the Irish province in 2016.

Ulster announced earlier on Friday that Coetzee had this week undergone what has been described as "revision surgery" on his left knee and that this has a recovery period of nine months.

That means Coetzee, whose contract runs until the 2018-19 season, is not likely to return to Ulster until next summer's pre-season.

Speaking after Ulster's 19-9 European Champions Cup win over Wasps on Friday night, Kiss scotched any notion that the injury-ravaged Coetzee would be cut loose.

He said: "We'll stick by him, he's here and he has a contract with us."

Pretty unusual for a repair not to work but he's still a young lad and he'll be back.

I find myself discombobulated by the very notion that we will "stick by him". I'd like something more than 5 appearances for the £1,000,000 that seasons 1 & 2 will have cost. After all we are getting 4.5 months from Leali'ifano for £200,000.

Oh hold on, yes he is that much better than our Christian- the centre.

Marcel in the brief chat I had with him appears as nice as Robbie Diack but FFFS how can we possibly think there is a future in this contract? The poor guy has dodgy knees, he is in a very literal sense a liability.... just like Leali'ifano.

This is negligence. We should now be in the market for a replacement calling for insurance to resolve Marcel's contract. I wish him nothing but well but this is a bad joke.

The only way I would agree on Marcel staying is if Insurance pays for his next season while out, D4 give us a medical joker, in absence of this it’s a no brainer.
Team comes first and Marcel should be released.

If he does stay he owes UR big time!

It's a bad situation and I think we should not let out disappointment drift into any criticism of marcell. There is no-one feeling worse than him about this. The guy has a contract till the end of next season and we should stand by it otherwise how can we ever attract any world class talent. If he gets a good season next year I'd say he will feel obliged to stay for longer. An injury joker would be nice but timmoney and rea are hardly crying this morning.

If I gave that impression it is not intended, I have every sympathy for him personally but you cannot live with a marquee signing playing parts of five games in two seasons. This is something that needs to be done in a businesslike way, it's ridiculous to think there is the remotest likelihood of him playing a full or even large part of a season with his sad history of injury.

I would say his closest friends would understand that when Ulster are so limited in who they can bring in, they would understand him being released.

Think also about someone coming in to replace him, are they more likely to come if they have a temporary contract or if they have a long term contract?

I don't think anyone has crossed that line baggy but it is easy to forget who is really hurt by this. If there was a mutually acceptable way to end the contract then ok, but if marcell is saying I want to come back and repay Ulster then what can we really do? By the sound of kiss it is a done deal so the real question is will lucifora sanction a temporary replacement. Unlikely in my opinion as our SID in the back row is better than last year when he shat on us.

Problem is, if Marcel does see out the remainder of his contract, his gametime will be heavily managed (if he doesn't get injured again).

Completely as expected, there was no way he was going back for a simple consultation,UR were simply managing the timing of the announcement.

Poor guy, if he was 30 or older I'm sure his career would be over.

Don't see the issue in theory of keeping him, should simply have his wages paid by insurance, then we sign cover. As was said above if he has a cracking season next year then happy days, and hopefully he feels he would sign an extension given that we stood by him.

Problem with that as always is dublin.

Reality is that he is soo much better than what I believe we are currently able to sign
