I'm frankly amazed that a couple or more denizens of this board didn't jump in immediately and say who the first winners of the second oldest competition in the world were.

Ah the UH cup. Loved playing in that competition.

We got to the UH cup final, but lost to Imperial if I remember, the gits. Didn't reach even the quarters of the schools cup mind in my year, not that I was in the team, broke my arm badly in medallion year.
Why? Why not?

whilst we're on history, the Ranfurly shield - one of the oldest competitions outside of the UK was donated to NZ by a Dungannon man

Point of Order, there was the United Hospitals, Cup AND THe Hospitals Cup. This is something that gets mixed up and I believe Gentleman Jim Neilly sometimes mixes the two up, Does anyone here now anything about the Hospitals Cup?

The Dublin Hospitals Cup foolishly claim to be the oldest competition in Ireland. Clearly they have never listened to a Gusher commentary.

Not quite baggy - they claim it's the oldest Trophy.... and they could be right

http://www.rcsismj.com/wp-content/uploa ... _Rugby.pdf

Althought the competition is a relative youngster dating from only 1881 it seems that the cup they award was an old hunting cup originally made in 1812. So though the United Hospitals cup was first competed for in the 1874/1875 season and the Ulster schools cup in 1876 the Dublin trophy predates both.

You have been helped ;-)

and of course the trophy for the Ulster schools Cup has changed a couple of times too.

The original cup (from 1876) is still used, but after a number of years, when it could no longer have more winners inscribed on it, it was attached to a wooden plinth to which were added more winners' plaques. When that too became full, it was replaced in 1976 (centenary year) by the MCB (winners that year) and the non-original-original plinth is now on display at Ravenhill.
