Player of the season
With a matter of a few games left its approaching time to think about the player of the season.
I think its a really hard call as it has been an inconsistant one in terms of players availablity and performance.
I would say that no player has impacted to the extent of Nick Williams and he has been our x factor so would get my vote.
Missed him more than any other player when we had the crisis.
Strong call for Trimble as a week in week out performer, to a high level which never dipped but for me its between those two.
Young player is between Olding and Henderson, flip a coin there.
Most improved Diack, if there is an award for that he would be nailed on

Olding has been a find, but Henderson has been superb and collected 5 caps.
Player of the year is tough, but I'm going for Henry. He's the heartbeat.

Trimble no question. Team has been up and down in terms of performance owing to absences across the board, but Trimble has been consistent.

Re: Player of the season
Angry Andy and Darren have played much more Rugby than any other Ulster player this season. Angry probably wins it for me though Darren was consistently excellent and like many classy players is appreciated most when he isn't there.
There is no comparison between Henderson and Olding, Olding for his immense promise has played about as many Ulster games as Henderson has won Irish caps. Henderson by a country mile.

NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.

I think with Henderson would have to agree Snipe.
Henry would have been my choice but has been missing for a lot of the season and has only played in virtually half the games Trimble has.
I might go towards Trimble for that reason thinking about it because even during our bad period he played in every minute in every game and was our best player.
We were picking up bonus points in those times which are invaluable now.

I would go for Trimble. Never had a bad game.

Always a difficult one.
I'd say Diack should get an honourable mention for being a model of consistency. It is, sadly, the plight of players like Diack that they are seldom mentioned in these lists. He wouldn't be my choice but I think attention should be drawn to his contribution to Ulster's season.
Another mention, I think, should go to Lewis Stevenson. Marked improvement this season and with hopefully more to come, the second-row post-Muller isn't looking all that bad.
My choice for player of the year, though, is Trimble. I can't think of a time when his game has been more effective and I think a lot of that has come with him finding where is game really is. He doesn't always try it, he knows when to try it and when to do something else. More than anything, he also seems to be stepping up more and more as a leader and as a spokesperson for the team. Great season from Trimble.

Trimble. Perfect example of a player who doesn't take the hump and when he's knocked off the horse he gets right back up there and improves himself. Great season, biggest hitter in the backs, huge yardage and good try scoring return for any season.

A lot of guys should be discounted due to injury. Henry, Bowe, Williams, Payne have all had big seasons, but have been hampered by injury.
I'm gonna go with Trimble as well.

Yeah great season from Trimbie - consistency, effort and more than a few "champagne moments". The big hits are nearly as enjoyable as the trys.

Despite what Declan Kidney may think, I'd go for Andy T in the backs and Tom C in the forwards with Andy just shading it over all.
Re: Player of the season
Trimble or Diack.
Simples.
Could this not be made a poll?

Re: Player of the season
I'm surprised there's been no mention of BBJ so far.
Has everyone been put off by his commuting to work lately and forgotten how much he's already played this year and consistently at such a high level?
Not suggesting he's a shoe-in, but thought he would at least have been mentioned in dispatches.

Most people are probably drunk off with his wee trips back home.Cap'n Grumpy wrote:I'm surprised there's been no mention of BBJ so far.

I agree he's been great. Tough call this year though. Skymarshall and Hendo both breaking into Six Nations rugby, Olding has caught our attention. Can we have a Young Player of the Year too?
Angry Andy has had an excellent season, Diack has been Mr Consistent. I feel we probably can't make much of an assessment of our big guns because they've been out for long periods.
