Seymour & Shiels

Post by darkside lightside »

can someone help me - UR are very slow and half-assed at updating their squad lists (Munster & Leinster now have full 10-11 squad and academy lists posted) and I'm frustrated that I can't complete my geeky squad tracking spreadsheets for this season :)

Our academy obviously hasn't been finalised - but they have stripped out a few names from last year, including the 4 who I think have previously been announced as having been elevated to development contracts - Macklin, McAllister, Porter and Spence - however these guys haven't been added to the first squad list (but presumably will be when UR pull the finger out - Pienaar still hasn't been added, but Willis is still on there...)

Seymour and Shiels likewise don't appear in the academy squad for this year, and they are both 22 they are presumably a little long in the tooth for it - but also haven't appeared in the first squad list - so what's the story with them? Are they too on development contracts? or do they inhabit some strange nether-world betwixt academy and development???

Good, reasonable questions? Money in the boot?
From the rolling glens of Antrim through the hills of Donegal we will stand and shout for Ulster as we win both scrum and maul from the lovely lakes of Fermanagh tae the shores of ould Lough Gall we will scream and shout for Ulster as we beat them one and all!

It is frustrating how the UB can be slow to update these things but hey ho.

Without wanting to be pedantic is Shiels even as old as 22? I thought he was a couple of years younger than that, in which case it would be even more of a surprise if he has lost his place in the Academy given he played for Ulster a couple of times last season.

I doff my cap D/L. Still I thought he acquitted himself pretty well on the couple of occasions he got off the bench last season so it would be disapointing if he has lost his contract. On Seymour McL singled him out specifically in the Tele today as an option for this season so he's still there or thereabouts.

If that link is to be believed, and it does seem fairly comprehensive the Development and Academy players are as follows:

Development - Macklin, McAllister, Porter, Annett, Seymour, Spence, Shiels

Academy - Jackson, McKinney, Allen, Cochrane, Birch, Marshall, Gilroy, Burns, Heaney, McIlwaine

If the link is to be believed then it also seems there has been a change in what Humph was allowed to do for the season. I believe he informed us that he was allowed 4 development contracts (there are 7 on that list). I could have misunderstood however.

Pure specualtion but maybe Annett is our 10th front row forward - requirement for HC I believe.

Seymour and Shiels - possibly something to do with Willis going, no utility back signed and less than encouraging news about Cunningham.
