We played "Rugby Canada" once too - late 80s maybe? But they weren't a full test side.
Never wrestle with a pig. You end up covered in muck and the pig loves it.

He was. From Churchill just outside Derrygonnelly. Model had an old schoolhouse in Churchill they used to take us for a week to get away from the troubles. His mum also lived there. Ernie set that up. Now gone sadly.Marco wrote: ↑Mon Jan 23, 2023 5:09 amOld Portora man, was Ernie, we’re all sound! Was at the ‘78 AB game also, first year at Queens, helicopters overhead, a dank dark oul day, remember Billy Bush running out past us at the start, different level size, we weren’t going to win, but it was all about the occasion.CIMANFOREVER wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 11:36 pm Ernie was sound tbf. Many a Model boy would've taken a wrong turn but for Ernie and a cadre of teachers at the Model at that time whom gave a shyte. Height of the troubles don't forget.
Many ended up at CI, from colts onwards.
The 89 AB match has the infamous big biff up, where Willie got a black eye from Shelford was it? Gatland made a rare start. Inga Tuigamala was outstanding. Great game & crowd but we never looked like scoring a try.

That Romanian team was pretty handy.
That year they beat France 15-0 in Bucharest and drew 1313 with an Ireland XV at Lansdowne Rd.
... and there's more courtesay of Wiki: Their national side beat Wales (twice – 1983: 24–6 in Romania, 1988: 15–9 in Wales), Scotland (the 1984 Grand Slam side 28–22 in Romania), France (twice 1980: 15–0 in Romania, 1982: 13–9 in Romania) and drew with Ireland (13–13, in 1980, at Dublin). In 1981, they lost to the All Blacks 14–6 but had two tries disallowed

Blimey.
Must be one or two with an Irish granny we can sign up.
Just remembered they were the opponents at Wembley in 2015 when Tommy got a couple.
89,000 of us there for that particular mismatch.

The great leader, Lionel?
Folk talking of their international debuts earlier, mine was aged 14, 1969 v France, crushed them 14-9 I think but memory untrustworthy at pensionista status. About to depart the northern statelet for warmer climes good to see my chums, pals and mates at Ravenhill on Saturday.
My thanks to Duane for changing that game decisively when he took a charge at some boy, lifting crowd and teammates alike.
Last I'll see him in the flesh, a champion. Farewell
NEVER MOVE ON. Years on, I cannot ever watch Ireland with anything but indifference, I continue to wish for the imminent death of Donal Spring, the FIRFUC's executioner of Wee Paddy & Wee Stu, and I hate the FIRFUCs with undiminished passion.
