Whilst I have every sympathy for the family and friends of Dan Kneen, can we really call the death of a road racing motorcyclist a tragedy?
Colin
With due respect in the strictest Dictionary definition of the word we can.

No disrespect to the man or the sport but it seems to be par for the course - and something the participants are both aware of and accepting of when they choose to ride out of the pits.
Over 250 fatalities on the mountain course in the last 100 odd years. Shocking really.
And another one in critical condition and the racing not over yet
The actual racing hasn't even started yet. If road racing had just been conceived it would never be sanctioned.

I have had a long-standing passing interest in bikes since my dad took me to see TT racing on a family holiday in IOM. Frankly, it scares the living bejaysus out of me given its record of deaths and even the greatest are not immune, a mechanical fault, hitting an oil patch from somebody's ailing bike or just a minor misjudgement can be curtains.

It's a personal tragedy, if not an annual expected happening, particularly in the IOM

Fair enough, didn't mean to be insensitive about it - it is tragic for those who he leaves behind.

For me, road racing is a competition between men aiming to be the one who fleets closest with death but survives. Perhaps that is why most of the greats of the sport passed on the circuits. For mainly this reason I have no interest in or connection to the sport and I find it absurd on some levels but that's probably due to disconnection.

Not that different to somebody in an army. The chances of dying young are higher than those in the general population. I'm sure his family think it is a tragedy. Most of us don't care as we didn't know him.

Down to his brother, I suppose but it's probably what he would have wanted.
