All Sinn Fein representitives take the Industrial wage as far as I know. I for one would be happy to get that salary myself ,but it is one of SF policies that is commendable if not a little contrived to appeal to the workin man .But hey its a start :salut:

Remember the time she was MEP, not exactly the brightest candle out there.
Indeed. She won't be winning international mastermind any time soon.

Brightest candle eh....Mmmm that reminds me of a Eurovision Song and given ould Dana's exploits in this field this song may be somewhat apt for her now....

Just like a flower when winter begins
Just like a candle blown out in the wind
Just like a bird that can no longer fly
I'm feeling that way sometimes

But then as I'm falling weighed down by the load
I picture a light at the end of the road
And closing my eyes, I can see through the dark
The dream that is in my heart

A little loving, a little giving
To build a dream for the world we live in
A little patience and understanding
For our tomorrow a little peace

A little sunshine, a sea of gladness
To wash away all the tears of sadness
A little hoping, a little praying
For our tomorrow a little peace

I feel I'm a leaf in the November snow
I fell to the ground, there was no one below
So now I am helpless alone with my song
Just wishing the storm was gone

A little loving, a little giving
To build a dream for the world we live in
A little patience and understanding
For our tomorrow a little peace

A little sunshine, a sea of gladness
To wash away all the tears of sadness
A little hoping, a little praying
For our tomorrow a little peace

We are feathers on the breeze
Sing with me this song of peace
We are feathers on the breeze
Sing with me this song of peace

Ah now Namron, I don't think anybody on this board expects you to take a huge reduction in your salary. :)

Bais--this is all getting a bit ridiculous...
If the Republic wants to vote for a former terrorist to represent their country on the international stage then that is fine--but anyone who votes for him may as well be honest about it and also praise the 9-11 bombings and all the other such atrocities carried out by other terrorist groups--there is no difference.

Marty may be a devout RC, and if that is the case he knows he'll be judged by his maker one day. However, is his decision to stand really about doing his best to represent the people of the ROI or more about raising the publicity of wee Marty and SF?

A very shrewd, charismatic and capable politician he is--but feck me can you really trust his motives?

The answer to that would probably require much psychological research and several PhD's...lol

I would hope so with some of them---answers on a postcard to ..... :banghead:

Whatever my opinion on the man I can't agree with this. Voting for an ex-terrorist is one thing, especially when you consider the "ex" part of it. I don't think people who may vote for him are endorsing some of the activities he was involved in over the years. What a lot of people would think is they are voting to endorse the Belfast Agreement and all that goes with it including welcoming those folks operating in manners which would have appalled one into mainstream society. Hate the sin, love the sinner, forgiveness is the path to salvation etc.

Rejoicing over death and destruction is a different thing entirely. If there was no Belfast Agreement, IRA end of operations, working assembly where former enemies seem to be able to work reasonably well together then this guy wouldn't pick up more than some traditional hardcore vote. I think people want to believe things have changed and are changing. I think a lot of people think we can't keep shunning people because of the things they did in the past or we'll never move forward. I wouldn't condemn somebody for hoping that this is the right way forward.

It seems to me that his and SF's motives is to test the water in Éire to see what kind of nationwide support is there. They appear to be a growing force down here and they have the next general election to think about and subsequent elections. This seems a reasonable motive to me for a political party. At the end of this it will be up to the people to decide if they want him or not. I believe in the concept of free choice and free elections and if this is what my fellow countryman decree then so be it.

The Irish President doesn't have any executive power.

Some you can Rooster. Most of the ones who can be trusted are not part of the big establishment parties.

A good friend of my family was a TD back in the 80's-mid 90's for his Democratic Socialist Party which was merged with the Labour Party in 1990. He was a man who could be trusted and his primary interest was trying to help the ordinary folk of Limerick and Ireland.

Also he lost his seat in 1982 to the local Labour Party man who also was a great man for the ordinary working people of Limerick. I remember my dad lost his job in 1982 in Limerick City and this Labour Party TD really went out of his way to help in whatever way was possible despite the fact we lived in County Clare so we could not vote for him which he knew. I actually work with this man's daughter now and she is a really nice person unsurprisingly.

Both these guys struggled to get elected, with most voters favouring the kn-bs in the centre right parties who wouldn't píss on you if you were on fire. In a way the public get what they deserve for their f-ckheaded stupidity.

Oh yeah we thought we were all high fliers. We're fecking paying for it now though. Still it was a wild old time while it lasted. If only we knew it was going to end we wouldn't have peed it all away.

Some enforced northern temperance may not have gone amiss Shan
I spent a bit of time in the wesht of Ireland during the boom and I was more than envious of the salaries which mostly funded Southfork type houses or lovely new German cars. Cyclical capitalism at its most virulent .I remember being at a funeral in Galway in those years and the Priest protested over the excesses- He was nearly laughed out of the pulpit. Some sobering reflection by the parishioners now methinks.

I think it is a hard one to admit to but I think I loathe Dana even more than I have a bad history with Marty.

Dana has no redeeming features & seems to regard herself as Ireland's Pope from some ould crap she spouts,
whereas, like him or not Marty has at least become an adept politician or professional liar as prefer to call them.

Though old call.

That said a lot of people I spoke to today said they wouldn't even consider giving him a vote and don't have any interest in listening to anything he has to say.....I suppose Jackie will accuse them of being Anti-Ulster.
Certainly not, you can take the whole shower of them if you want.

He won't get in anyway sadly, still lying about how long he was in the IRA, including lying to the Saville Inquiry. And lying politicians will never get anywhere..........
Jackie much as I agree with your sentiments surely lying is the only way they get anywhere. I never thought they did it any other way.
