A Lionel was maligning the lack of VAR in '86 for the "hand of God" incident. I had to remind him about the '66 final. Pity these things aren't retrospective

Maradonna is disgrace in just about every possible way. The absolute antithesis of Messi who is a model professional.

The producer last night presumably regrets his decision to cut to Maradona after the late winner, having treated us all to the delightful sight of his stubby little middle digits.

I don’t remember the great Sir Tom Finney, God rest his soul, ever celebrating an England goal at Wembley in that fashion.

Yes but there was that time when former captain of England and Beverly Sister, Billy Wright famously took a sh1t on a USA flag, following their defeat to them in the 1950 world cup.

Also it was Sir Stanley Matthews that allegedly introduced the 'soggy biscuit' game to the USA side after that match.
Players took the game back the States and is still traditionally enjoyed by families across the US on every independence day since.

Well of course but neither could hold a candle to Sir Tom, on or off the pitch.

Not necessarily true as 'candling' was a very crude initiation carried out by the England football team post war with origins in the English public schools.
Apparently this act continued as long as into the late 70s.
Where there is no actual evidence of Wright or Matthews indulging in this practise specifically with Finney there was a reference in Finneys unofficial biography "Pressed on Tom" which may shed some light on the subject.

"Matthews and Wright were always the chaps to avoid on the long away trips with England especially for a new team member. Walter Winterbottom would always turn a blind eye when the candles came out of an evening after supper".

It could be fairly cagey. I'm not sure either side will risk too much. It's got a draw written all over it.

I find myself on the horns of a dilemma. I don't hate Perfidious Albion with my normal level of venom. It feels wrong as my natural default is to wish them shuddering humiliation and misfortune at every turn.
Southgate seems a decent spud and they have a team of youngfellas who seem less full of themselves than usual.

I may have to go looking for the "ask the expert" tread to seek guidance.
