The best thing about this World Cup so far has been the pictures on this thread. Therefore, Neil, I think there is no harm in going with the birds on this one and supporting England. :D

Poor enough stuff today but at least England got the win to keep them going for another while and keep their over-expectant media contented.

Hopefully this thing will take off a bit more when we get to the knock out phase.

Oh yeah fair play to the yanks as well. I doubt if even they thought they could top the group. USA USA USA!!! Uncle Sam is proud of ye boys. :)

I suspect Ghana were pretty happy too not having to face England in the next round.

A friend has just pointed out that the other half's name fits quite neatly into this rhyme.

Think I'll take Shan's advice and go with England; I fear for my safety in doing so, though. The last time I did so, a fellow Ulsterman told me to either stop support England or take me Ireland shirt off... :(

I have to admit - i'm no great fan of ANY England sports team....generally the whole overblown hype peeves me beyond measure....but i'll support the English over Germany - any time, i'm afraid. Hypocritical? Maybe. Jingoistic? More than likely!
Thought England were the better team today....deserved the win. Milner had a great game - having thrown off the illness he was suffering from in the opening match - he looked like a different player today. JT (for all his arrogance) was also impressive today - don't like the man, but you know exactly what you are going to get from him...100% commitment. Just a pity it's teamed with an egotistical selfish streak a mile wide...imho.
Anyway - onwards and upwards. Hope they beat the Germans. England expects!!!! :salut:

And now for the important stuff....
Sadly we said goodbye to Bafana Bafana (so average they named them twice) who did at least put France firmly in their box.

did anyone else see John Terry's comedy head-first arms-by-side seal-dive yesterday, in an attempt to block a shot :D

when they showed the slow-mo, the place where I was watching it cracked up laughing. There's a good still of it in the Sun today, with Johnson in the background holding his knackers :)

So the reigning champions are out on their collective ear. Can't say i'm too surprised - definite lack of quality in their forward line....Luca Toni should have travelled. Cannavaro looks like it's been a tournament too far for him....and overall the average age of the squad was way too high. Sorry to see their fans go, though.....for obvious reasons.

Japan have been superb tonight....a joy to watch. Denmark - yet another distinctly average European side.

And for the record....South Africa were one of my sweepstake teams (Chile being the other) so i am sorry to see them go out, particularly with our newly found strong Saffie connections at Ravenhill. But here's another reason for supporting them....

RTE v BBC punditry.
Well, Gary Lineker had good news for the English nation yesterday,
telling them the BBC's sources had reliably informed him Stevie would
be playing through the middle against Slovenia , "at the head of the
diamond".
Gary, the two Als, Hansen and Shearer, and Lee Dixon then based their
entire pre-match analysis on their source's disclosure, which was
unfortunate because the information was thoroughly incorrect.

Roy Hodgson tried to warn them, insisting Stevie would, most probably,
play on the left, but Lee Dixon hoped, trusted and prayed he was
wrong.

"If he's playing on the left today we should all pack up and go home,"
he sighed.

Match time. Stevie on the left. Lee dusting down his rucksack. But
wait, goal. England . Up and running?

Half-time. Fantasy World Cup Punditry, all of them in the one studio.
Ready?

Hansen: "Once England got the goal the confidence levels surged, they
were excellent."

Eamon Dunphy: "They just didn't grow in confidence at all after the
goal."

Lineker: "The goal really settled them, didn't it? They pushed on from
there."

Ronnie Whelan: "You'd think they'd have kicked on from when they
scored, but they actually got worse."

Roy : " England 's crossing has been absolutely outstanding."

Giles: "Some of the crossing was just awful."

Shearer: "Rooney looks more confident, he's getting around the pitch a
lot better."

Dunphy: "It's shocking to see Rooney so subdued, he's been reduced to
a shivering wreck."

Shearer: "They look much more comfortable on the ball, they're passing
it with a purpose, with pace, they're closing down - a much better
performance, it's encouraging."

Giles: "They're much better than they have been, but they couldn't
have been worse."

No arguments, then. Second half. England held on. Full-time. Ready?

Lee Dixon: "A great performance."

Dunphy: "Shocking . . . absolutely incredibly bad . . . pretty awful
stuff."

Hansen: "The commitment was there, the spirit was there, the
enterprise was there, the creativity was there, they passed it better
- they could have scored five or six quite easily. Capello will
obviously be delighted with the performance."

Giles: "If that's the shackles off what'll they be like when the
shackles are back on?"

'Arry Redknapp: "We played with pace, we got after them, we pressed
them, there wasn't a weakness in the team."

Dunphy: "They were astonishingly poor."

Lineker: "He looked more like the Rooney we know."

Ronnie: "Rooney is a major worry, his form, his body language, his
demeanour, everything."

Dixon : "Gerrard was outstanding."

Dunphy: "I can't believe how bad Gerrard was today."

'Arry: "Across midfield we were top drawer."

Giles: "Barry got worse as the game went on, Milner, Gerrard and
Lampard the same."

'Arry: "Bring it on! Whoever we play we'll be difficult to beat."

Ronnie: "If they don't improve they'll go straight out, it was a very,
very inept performance."
