Just had a chat with a medic who worked quite closely with Hugh for a while. My 'informant' was pretty impressed.

Hugh is a good guy who is passionate about Ulster rugby and that is a good start. What does this role involve? From watching Ulster at all levels whilst also watching the club game there are lots of positives.

If Hugh can pull Ulster back together, playing together for Ulster whilst making those involved enthused that will go a long way. The young academy players need to be brought into senior training and exposed to higher level rugby. Playing AIL is miles away from URC.

Academy guys/top AIL players need to be challenged more. Rebuild will take 3-5 years. Don’t expect any silverware but steady progress and improvement. Better choices also need to be made with regards to the expensive outside non Irish qualified players.

Hard work ahead.

First thing to sort is to get a decent sponsor for next season.
2nd thing is to get rid of Bryn.

If he manages those 2 objectives, he's the right man for the job.

Look the guy is familiar with long waiting lists. If he manages to create half the HSC waiting list for UR season tickets, then we are cooking.

Good luck to him, I hope it goes well. The question that needs to be answered though is what would success look like, what is his remit and what is Bryn's (and Dublin too obviously). I would guess what he would be trying to do is create a great culture with the administrative type people, trying to build our sponsorship revenue (chief to that replacing Kingspan's money), ensuring that the administrative side is as competent as possible, and getting himself out there at the clubs and seeing how he can assist them. Is the whole professional side under Bryn now, what about the academy?

To add to my own question, he could sort out the committees that any related to finance, marketing etc. are run by the paid employee of UR, with a few limited other full time IRFU employees e.g. finance should be Ulster head of finance, CEO, IRFU FD, IRFU CEO and possibly Humphries and that should be it. A £12m turnover business does not need any more than that for a finance meeting.

Interesting the part re the Kappa deal collapsing, but the same journalist I see wrote a piece saying Bryn was going to be the interim CEO and the other guy was announced instead. So will take some of the detail with caution.

Would not be the first time this journalist has got Ulster related stuff wrong.

Interesting re Kappa, the journalist doesn't even hint at a reason for the potential collapse of the Kappa deal. Leaving it open to interpretation....
