Mental condition?

Post by UlsterNo9 »

So........

A long overdue holiday arrived (past tense)

To kick start the holiday the missus says why don't you switch the phones off (1xwork 1xpersonnal) for the first couple of days to properly close all out, cleanse the brain. Just me in her..... stick with me (she is not the problem.... hard to believe).

Not one to question my missus  I agree, i'm on my holidays the form is good why rock the boat?

Right..... All mobile devices switched off.

Result.

I couldn't handle it.

The whatsapp group banter, the turmoil of work email when things go wrong, the updates from various website feeds.....

Has this been identified as a medical condition?

It was horrible......clock watching.... is this what others call a normal holiday?

I couldn't get my day in.

It’s easier to answer work emails when you’re off. The last time I went away and left the phone at home, I came back to carnage. Never did it again.

It's not a mental condition but human beings do have a large propensity to become attached to activities that stimulate the reward pathways in the brain.

Guys are talking bollix 9

You need to destress, your missus I suspect has you sussed, hence her suggestion in the first place. Getting your day in on holiday should be a gift. One of my great joys this last couple of months is that I now work to "Dave time", do what I want, when I want, not when I MUST. (all within the reasonable arrangements of a happy marriage)

Not knowing you I can only speak in generalities, but for what it's worth, chill TFO, even if you have to learn how to do it. :thumleft:

I suspect Baggy this is a generation thing. In days of old when I took kids to events it was non stop chatter. Now days it's heads down, headphones in and fingers working overtime. Like you, I have nothing to do to fill my day, and only half of it done by bedtime.

Don't doubt that at all MUM but for me the tell is his missus who unlike most of us knows him. That apart, ain't life great? :thumleft:

Poor choice of title on reflection I must admit. A little dismissive of mental illness, for that I apologise.

My main side affect was more to do with how I could actually get my day in. Something I hadn't actually considered prior to experiment.

Good idea Russ and I will do it myself........ soon, I assume that this month long detox will involve you not going onto the uafc? This could be mutually beneficial to us all...... I jest.

Baggy you 're 100% on the money "the bloodhound" can identify what and how I am before I realise it myself. The need to destress is a must, and the reason for any holiday in my book, but I wouldn't consider my day to day stress levels unsave or unmanageable. I've a demanding occupation but nothing that keeps me awake more than once every couple of months, which I feel is a safe level. I do keep a rule not to work or read work emails after 8pm, I'm in bed for 11pm most nights. I did find before imposing this rule that working late and not giving the body/mind time to switch off before going to bed did affect my sleep pattern. Work related thoughts running through my head.

MUM most definately a generational thing, although not a kid I still have all of my own teeth, I'm probably sitting at mid point in my lifespan. I'm not of the generation though that is accustomed to have to make their own fun, I do remember the days of only having four channels on the box but there would always have been 2/3 televisions in the house growing up and a nintendo or sega to keep you amused.

Not normally a watch wearer I did go and buy one during this phones off ban..... partly to put the day in. I use my phone to keep an eye on time but have noticed since that using my phone to check the time means nine times out of ten once out of my pocket for no reason at all I'm unlocking it and rifling through apps, emails etc. The watch is now a permanent fixture.

You may not be aware that your stress levels are becoming critical. Modern life is very stressful and it is probably more so the fact that you are in constant contact with everyone and everything by means of the little device that resides in your pocket. It seems to be the case that these days most peoples work/life balance is in favour of work. Definately the case the further up the totem pole you go. I certainly found that and before I retired I was aware that my stress levels were reaching their peak. (Probably in part due to being an Ulster supporter). You need time to chill. Get some 'me time' and do something you love, should it be physical activity or a hobby. You have been helped.

Well whatever about gowlacting on the phone for fun during the holidays I wouldn't be logging in to collect any ballix that is work-related. If anyone wanted me to do that they could pay me well over the entry 6 figure salary. Otherwise they can sniff my sweaty bag.

I was at home one Saturday afternoon enjoying the horseracing on TV and my phone rang. Saw it was my manager and just laughed at it and continued with the racing. Those are the days I'm glad I'm not in a senior position. I'll take the sh1te pay in exchange for not being a 24/7 slave. If the company ever asked me to take a company phone I'd say "double my salary and I'll consider it" Think I know who wins that one.

You see young Bogman, you post weeks of shyte and then this, precisely my own feelings on "the work/life balance"! Not an expression I've ever placed much credence or interest in.

It may not surprise many that I was a mouthy sort at work, never happy to find a "superior" superior because very clearly they weren't (though a few were worthy of my respect, not many) never happy to "play the game", never happy to lie or kiss ass in the hope that I would gain an advantage from some snotterbax who could "do me a favour", so like Shan I never ran the place, just worked for the bast@rds. Being a socialist in a bank probably didn't endear me to my employer either.

I'll just say that anyone*** who does not understand that work-life balance means understanding that you work to pay the bills, buy your season ticket, holidays and a cornucopia of gins, whiskeys, wines etc has no metal balance to begin with, whilst understanding that not all work has to be a daily trial.

*** I can accept that someone may just have a job so immensely satisfying and plain necessary for their mental health that exceptions may be possible, but as always here, we're dealing in generalities.

No. 9, there are few things better in life than a perceptive wife to help you through life's occasional, if you're lucky, troubles. Listen to her is the best advice I could offer. Also having no idea what your holiday involves leaves me short of ideas, I can only say that despite my choice of place to live, beach holidays would give me very serious depression, I need to fill my days, I love to be out and about, walking, climbing even, meeting people, whatever, not stagnating somewhere for 2/3/4 weeks, that sounds like work to me.

My only exception to that is if I have something decent to read, then I can sit for a few hours. >EW

I don't think there is any need for an apology, 9er. It's one of the most reflective posts of all time. It has opened a valuable conversation that we should keep going. We might not all have a mental illness but are all vulnerable to mental illness unless we are taking active steps to improve our own mental wellbeing.

Mental wellbeing should never be taken lightly and I would like to think anyone on here if they are ever in distress they would pm someone on here and talk, it is far more common than people think and a wee group of people to "chat" to is the best way to get out of the ever deepening hole.
I would say with confidence that quite a few here have been under the weather at some stage or other and will respond favourably, I know have have some great mates I can turn to if the days are getting dark.
As they say talking is good.

Yip 100% Rooster & Dave, I'm no stranger to the black dog but I never took anything offensive from your thread title, admittedly there are few things that "offend" me as I find it's a terrible waste of energy.

So no, no apology needed. Some years back I started a thread on World Mental Health Day, 10th October annually. Quite apart from what was said on the short thread I had so many people who either suffered themselves or knew someone who had, who contacted me.

Never be alone with your problems, there are many people who will go a long way out of their way or comfort zone to help. The real key is first, admitting to yourself that you have a problem and secondly having the wit to have that first conversation, be it with a partner or perhaps your GP or just a close friend. There are many more people in the graveyard because of the silent killer, than people who pulled themselves together unaided.
