I was suggesting that the boys should have done much better fermain. After the runner-up spot last year they had a lot to live up to, but a top six finish was definitely within their reach with a top 4 a possibility.

Two tough breaks in the first and third games really scuppered them.

Argentina defeated Scotland 39-7 at Mendoza Rugby Club to claim fifth place in the IRB Under 21 World Championship standings, on a sunny, warm winter's day in Mendoza, Argentina.

England overcame Wales 57-32 at Liceo Rugby Club to claim seventh.

Ireland beat Samoa for the second time in this tournament, 34-17, to finish in ninth overall, whilst Canada recorded their first victory - a 33-30 nailbiter over Italy, to end up 11th.

Later on, attention focusses on the third place play-off, between France and New Zealand, and the final between South Africa and Australia, at the Malvinas Argentinas Stadium.

Irish U21s claim ninth in World Cup

Ireland U21 34 Samoa U21 17
Mark McDermott's Ireland side have beaten Samoa for the second time in this month's IRB Under-21 World Cup to claim ninth overall.

The Irish, who finished runners-up to New Zealand twelve months ago, ran out 34-17 winners over the Islanders thanks to tries from Stuart Philpott (2), Mark Kettyle and Stephen Ferris.

Captain and fly-half Gareth Steenson kicked four penalties and a conversion for a 14-point haul at Mendoza's Marista rugby club.

Saracens hooker Philpott barged over from a 16th-minute maul to open the scoring.

Anthony Tuimaga replied almost instantly with a try of his own for Samoa but Belfast Harlequins full-back Kettyle's try in first half injury-time pushed the Irish 13-5 in front.

Philpott then grabbed his second touchdown on 46 minutes from another lineout maul, and Dungannon back row Ferris made certain of the victory with a try on the hour mark, after a fine aerial take by Kettyle.

Coach McDermott said afterwards: " I think the players really enjoyed this last game of the tournament. We played much better than in our pool game against Samoa. We wanted to win the last two games and we achieved that."

Only two of last year's World Cup squad - Steenson and Harlequins' winger Paul McKenzie - made the Irish panel in Argentina this month.
