He looked shocked at what he'd done right after. I feel a little bit sorry for him actually.

Just viewed the incident. The look on Eddie Jones face is priceless. Why was he not starting?

The Saints fans seem to have lost patience with him. They say he's lost interest at Franklin's Gardens since he got the Engerland captaincy. Most of them would be happy if he didn't start for the rest of the season.

Because they didn't want to play 74 minutes with 14 men.

I actually think that in all other aspects of life, Hartley is probably a decent personable bloke, but for whatever reason, lacks the temperament to play rugby at this level (or any level for that matter).

Just a late thought on Hartley before we hear of his ridiculously lenient sentence tomorrow.

It just dawned on me that as he approached SOB from behind - the direction of choice for cowards - I suspect that you and I saw the back of Seannie's head but Hartley say the face of Stuart Lancaster, SOB's coach and the man who dumped him after his last indiscretion.

Fanciful? I think not.

Meanwhile I see all the usual suspects in English rugby are lining up to foster a feeling of poor old Dyan, bloody good chap, just a minor character flaw, eRFU CEO Ian Ritchie already saying how wonderful he's been as England captain and how he should be retained, the fawning press much the same.

Hopefully the tribunal will take cognisance of the obvious fact that it was an assault pure and simple, it was done with as hard a swing of his arm as he could manage, that it was a coward's cheapshot and that it resulted in SOB being unable to play on. Finally unless a serious additional sanction is added for a serial offender, the process looks toothless.

Expect 6 weeks. :puker:

Ritchie's argument is basically: he hasn't got sent off for a while.

I'm told the relationship between Hartley and Jim Mallinder is beyond repair.

Yes, that may be the case. I'd be more interested in knowing Jim Mallinder's expectancy at Saints right now - a man no doubt very relieved by Pat Lam going to Bristol. My sources tell me that Mallinder probably won't get away with sacking an underling this time (cf Paul Grayson) and it may be that Hartley thinks he'll be at Franklins Gardens longer than Mallinder !

That's not a million miles from what I've been told.

You could only feel for Mallinder when he was interviewed after the game, we all know what he was thinking, but how can he hang the current English captain in front to the Not the Heiny audience. Mallinder is in a funny position, I have to say I quite like Saints as a club in much the same way as Tigers, proper rugby clubs, But Hartley & to a lesser extent Lawes are two guys he has not managed to tame, not to mention Callum Clarke's thuggery, so the doubt remains, how much does he want to take that out of their game? Is he prepared to live with it, to have them right on the edge?

BUt it's like all things in life, if a friend lets you down, you'll give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe even twice if you are as generous of spirit as me >EW Thereafter they cease to be your friend, they are someone you know who does nothing but screw things up for you. The connection wears thin.
