Think it might be because Northern Ireland have never competed as a team in any competition so they are not allowed to field a team by the authorities. I know that is the case with the Hockey anyway so thinking it might be the same.

Me too. However, I think the problem (if you see it that way) is that the IRFU don't do 7s and the IRFU are in charge of proper rugby, 7s and 10s in Ireland.

All Hail IRFU    Standing alone in a sea of those other unions who sell out for a fast buck & tolerate 7s on that basis.

I abominate 7s, thank you IRFU, may your stance against this nonsense never change. :thumleft:

I could be wrong, but the IRFU do have a sevens programme, >rtfm

Northern Ireland are not at the Commonwealth games with a sevens team as their governing body for those playing g rugby is no longer part of the Commonwealth, however if we get our occupied 26 counties back maybe we can have one.

It'll be more interesting in 12 years time when ROI are at the games.

A referendum and vote on that would be very interesting, even more if they added in the 6 counties.

it wouldn't surprise me if ROI did rejoin the commonwealth. Public opinion down South is moving much closer to Britain than at any time since the creation of the state. The clowns up here are well off the pace when it comes to the pragmatic realities of good neighbourly relations. I'd give it 20 years though, BR may be a little optimistic with his call of 12.
