I never remember him being a passing 12. He can and does offload when defenders permit, but he was rumbled early on and defenders know what's coming and are ready to stop him offloading if they can.

He is an inside centre played as a back row who in the risk free approach of Professional rugby been discouraged to attempt to vary his game except the occasional pass and off load when within ten feet of the touch line — when any mistake can be harassed in to touch .

Kicks by McCloskey are as rare as forgiving women .

He has suffered from a lack of forwards in the team capable of breaking the line and had be given the job of carrier by successive coaches. This of course totally made our backs one dimensional and possibly one of the reasons DC was left out of the team for most of the season.

We’d have been screwed without him this year.

It could just be that Peel coaches Gatlandball

Can't keep blaming the coaching. The last time Ulster were very good was the year they beat Munster in the H Cup 1/4 final at Thomond. Didn't matter much who the coach was as Ulster simply had plenty of players who were of sufficiently high standard to go toe to toe with the better teams. Apart from a couple of these that was some starting team. Each one of the back row then individually is better than the combined backrow today.

Ulster: S Terblanche; A Trimble, D Cave, P Wallace, C Gilroy; I Humphreys, R Pienaar; T Court, R Best, J Afoa, J Muller (capt), D Tuohy, S Ferris, C Henry, P Wannenburg.

Replacements (not used): N Brady, P McAllister, A Macklin, L Stevenson, W Faloon, P Marshall, N Spence, A D'Arcy.

Now Ulster have Best, Hendo, Stockdale. Cave not getting much chance now and Gilroy you wouldn't fully trust on the field though still capable in attack if he gets a chance.

The only players available this season (so i am excluding Payne and Coetzee) who would get in that team are Stockdale and Hendo ahead of Gilroy and Tuohy. Best would get in albeit the Rory best of 2018 is not as good as the Rory Best of 2012.

Nevin Spence was the only quality player in the bench, with Brady and Paddy Mac able to do a job. Just shows that the depth was crap even then. The fact the entire starting xv played the entire 80mins also reflect this.
