Sooper Dooper qualification.

Post by big mervyn »

In accordance with a decision of the EPCR Board comprising the nine unions, federations and league bodies, the 20th place in the Champions Cup will be determined as follows:

i) Champions Cup winner, if not already qualified
ii) Challenge Cup winner, if not already qualified
iii) Challenge Cup losing finalist, if not already qualified
iv) Play-off match between the losing Challenge Cup semi-finalists, if not already qualified
v) Highest ranked non-qualified club by virtue of league position from the same league as the Champions Cup winner

So, if Leinster or Munster win the Champions Cup and
The 4 Parker Pen semi finalists qualify thru their leagues (Newcastle, Glaws and Cardiff currently in qualifying positions and Pau 7th , 2 pts behind 6th with 2 games to play.

Then the Pro14 gets an 8th spot making the playoff unecessary.

Is that correct? Neill?

Strange thing about that criteria is that a Parker Pen losing finalist or semifinalist can qualify but a Champions Cup non qualified losing finalist or semifinalist cannot  Makes no sense.

Here's a scenario.

The 8th spot is secured for the Pro14.
Ulster finish 5th in Conf B.
Treviso 4th beat Ospreys who finished 5th in Conf A to secure the 7th spot.
Would Ulster then claim the 8th spot because with more league points than Ospreys they would have technically finished higher in the league as specified in criterion (v)?

We don’t know to be honest. Would be Ospreys I reckon!

Logic would dictate that but the rules are open to interpretation.

So below is what needs to happen in the next few weeks for the Pro 14 to get an 8th spot and we assume no need for the Euro Playoff:

Leinster beat Racing 92 in the H Cup final

Newcastle and Gloucester to qualify for the 18/19 H Cup via the AP. Newcastle need a maximum of 5 points from Tigers away and Coventry home. Gloucester need a maximum of 8 points from Bath home and Sarries away. The max points will be needed only if Sale Sharks get 2 BP wins from Exeter away and Tigers home.

Pau to qualify for the 18/19 H Cup via the T14. To do so, 2 out of the next 3 things must happen: Pau must at least equal the number of match points which La Rochelle get over the last 2 games
Pau get 2 more match points than Castres over the last 2 games
Pau get 4 more match points than Lyon over the last 2 games

Pau have Montpellier away and Toulon home
La Rochelle have Toulouse away and Stade home
Castres have Toulon away and Oyonnax home
Lyon have Oyonnax away and Montpellier home

Pau may be the ones who don't make it.

Pau are definitely a long shot, more so as they will be aware that they are currently occupying a qualifying spot by virtue of their PP semi place.

Leinster play on the 12th.

If there needs to be a play off, then I've seen the 18th-20th mentioned as being the likely weekend (the same weekend as the Pro 14 semis).

That would be ideal, as we can then avoid the Royal Wedding street party on our road.

there's a space for a CCP (Champions cup playoff?) match on the Pro14 fixtures page the same weekend as the Pro 14 Semis (18/19 May)

Possibly a Challenge Cup playoff. If both finalists are already qualified for next year's Champions Cup through their domestic league then there is a playoff between the losing semi finalists if neither of them are already qualified.

Confused? You should be

That will be the space for the Edinburgh/Ulster v Ospreys game if needed. In last couple of years the main semi finals have been 7:45pm on the Friday and around 6:30pm on the Saturday. Any potential Euro playoff may well be the Saturday afternoon game (19th)....just speculating.
