Replacement 10?

Postby bangorboy » Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:09 am

Seems Quade Cooper has been dropped from the Reds and is looking overseas options.

Could we afford him?

Would we want him?

Not often an experienced 10 available mid season, and free just as CL will leave...

France will chuck silly money at him. I don't think he would turn that down.

It would be very "Ulster" to address a situation caused by a stupid ballbeg by signing another one.

Brad Thorn was a pragmatic sort of a guy on the pitch & appears to be not wanting any fancy-dans in his squad, a description that sits well on Barnes.

The likelihood is that he will sample the riches for little serious stress on the body in Japanese rugby but that ends in mid-January.

As for, "would we want him?", I think we need to think a bit more about that.

I'm not sure I'd want him long term, for talented and flaky though he is, he brings a load of talent but has constantly been a bit of a loose cannon on & off the pitch, not the Ulster Way. He seems to have been about forever but he's still in his 20s, so not an old dodder collecting a pension.

Would I take him for a few months to the end of the season in preference to Admirable Nelson? Sure FFFS that is a no-brainer. Admirable will be doing a job but very clearly you cannot seriously be looking to him as more than a stop gap.

So yeah, I'd take Barnes, warts and all............. if we have nothing more attractive in the pipeline.

Would he be interested? I doubt it, though with the writing on the wall at The Reds and him a long way from retirement he will doubtless look at all opportunities. Leafyfanny coming on loan was an alignment of fairly unique circumstances suiting all parties, I very much doubt we can afford to turn our noses up at any possibility involving a test player of merit.

That said Merv's assessment is apposite    .

Are we talking Quade Cooper or Berrick Barnes?

Season is a mess, the only thing a top quality short term out half signing would do is prolong Leslies stay of execution.

Mea culpa 9, I was thinking Cooper & writing Barnes. I have dyslexia, though this appears to confirm it as a rare type.

I believe this may be the 500th time this has been written, but:

Steenson has no interest whatsoever in returning to Ulster.

Even if he was interested, he is within a few months of Tommy Bowe's age, hardly the future.

How was he missed in our infamous World Wide Search?

Nah...we’ll sign another Safter with dodgy knees, who’ll be flown here in an Air Ambulance.

If I recall rightly we let the Chiefs have an aging lock for half a season mid contract when we were well stocked :stir:

Doesn't mean they will let go their first choice 10 notwithstanding they have Slade nor that he would come... the lad is doing a great job there and is for me a chief thru and thru..

There is however a World Cup winning 10 that might fill half a season for us...
