Does Mike Ross even want to be a coach? Maybe he plans to open his own cafe.
I have my own tv channel, what have you got?

It was this that put the idea in my head:
“I’ve an interest in coaching so that could be a possibility and I’ve a big interest in the tech space. I’m also looking at maybe doing some further education whether it’s a full-time or part-time masters.”

I'd imagine he'd be very well versed in the stroke/counterstroke that goes on between tight and loose in the scrum.

The thing that stands out to me is that he could scrummage right now and be (very) competitive at it. I've been told that the best way to know what is going on in any given scrum is actually to be in it - since I've no idea myself I have to take that at face value.

So, to me, it wouldn't be as if Ross could only stand on the training pitch and try to view whats happening (as per 99% of scrum coaches in the world) - he could get into the scrum and feel whats really going on with all players under real pressure. It could be a short (but great) window of opportunity for us.
 "Especially if he only knows how to coach tightheads" was a joke.
He's not currently a competitive prop, he's well past his sell by date. Jeepers Deccy Fitz could scrummage, but nobody is calling for his return. To coach any specialist role, you more than knowledge and experience as a practitioner.

I was calling for Ruan to be retained as a coach because of his exceptional ability to read a game, his interpersonal skills and ability to communicate. All we know about Ross was that he was the best tighthead in Ireland.

Reggie Corrigan was a decent scrum coach

Mike Ross has won numerous Heineken Cups and he was still togging out for Ireland last year as our first choice tight head. An old school prop, only useful in the scrum and useless everywhere else. None of this fancy running about and passing ballix, big Mike is exhibit A in the argument of excelling first at the bread and butter and worry about the other stuff later.

I'd take him at Ulster tomorrow in a coaching capacity no sweat, if nothing else he could tell our lads what you need to do to actually win things. I'm sure he'd have a tonne of knowledge to pass on to the young lads about propping too.

I don't understand this fuss about coaches and a scrum coach especially while we haven't dominated the set piece like Leinster I can't remember to many occasions when the Ulster scrums has been dominated and held its own in the set piece.

Where Ulster are weak is the loose and I can't for the life of me figure how a scrum coach is going to improve the loose play of forwards .

But then there is this fnn frame of mind that everything is solved by coaches -- for the love of use your brains its a back row that Ulster need not a scrum coach.
