Interesting selection for us. McCloskey's absence suggests that he has recently attended Irish bandcamp, which is very welcome, because I think he is a great and under-rated player who should absolutely be in the Ireland mix.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Lowry for the first time, and Jonathan Bradley tweeted that Moore was getting good mentions from players in pre-season. Another interesting one for me is Kernohan - I'll be honest any time I've seen him I haven't really been impressed, but he keeps getting selection nods, so there must be something about him.

As for Marcel, I'm happy enough for him to miss this one - I'm assuming it's obvious that our first choice back row will be him, Murphy + 1, and this seems like the first audition for the +1. Interesting that Marcus has made the starting XV, no sign of Matty Agnew or Aaron Hall, anyone know if they're injured? Or does this squad just show the current pecking order, i.e. Ross, Caleb and Jones ahead of them?

No Alan Bennie? Is he going to be another Lloyd or Rowley?

There seemed to be a rather large get together at Carton House. It's a world cup year so this type of thing could become quite regular. With any amount of potential injuries possible the likes of McCloskey and Reidy are involved now but haven't a snowballs chance of making the final squad unless there are significant injuries to others in their position.

I think that’s true of Reidy (I don’t think he’s even making these camps any more) but I don’t think McCloskey is too far away tbh..

Reidy was there. McCloskey has a right few ahead of him at 12. He isn't very versatile and Joe really doesn't rate him.

He’s actually doing him a bit of a favour with publicising his inclusion

Who all's going? I am. I hate these preseason games but I got a ST and the Ulster Scots "find a plaster and cut yerself" mentality prevails

was he really? I’m glad to hear it but a bit surprised, given the amount of good back rowers we have. Joe does like a disciplined worker bee..

In the centre I think the last season showed us Schmidt’s current pecking order was Aki, Henshaw, Ringrose and Farrell, roughly in that order. I think McCloskey is next - he really doesn’t seem to fancy Scannell (which is a bit strange because I thought he was great last year), Arnold needs to add more to his game, O’Loughlin’s never had a look-in.

Ulster Rugby is pleased to announce that the pre-season fixture versus Gloucester at Kingspan Stadium will once again be broadcast live on Facebook, thanks to Bank of Ireland.
Coverage of Saturday's match will start at 5.25pm on the Ulster Rugby Official Facebook page (kick off 5.30pm).

Graham Jewhurst will provide the commentary and he will be joined in the commentary box by Luke Marshall and Louis Ludik.
