Paddy Jackson’s late penalty spared Ulster’s blushes and sent them top of the Guinness PRO12 table as they scraped past the Newport-Gwent Dragons at the Kingspan Stadium, winning 17-15.

Jackson, one of three players released from international duty to play, came on at half-time and landed a conversion and the penalty three minutes from time that rescued the four points for Ulster.

Ulster produced a strong second half performance to take all five points away from home against Treviso, winning 32-13 in their clash at the Stadio di Monigo.

Ulster did all they could to boost their chances of making the quarter-finals of the Champions’ Cup as they ran in eight tries in a 56-3 rout of French side Oyonnax at the Kingspan Stadium.

Ulster A’s slim hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the British & Irish Cup came to an end after they suffered a 22-17 defeat to English side the Belford Blues at Deramore Park.
