After all of that, our European dream has ended in disappointment.

Despite doing all we needed to do, including adding an extra four tries on top of the four we needed, ultimately only one result went our way when we needed two, and we are now out of Europe. It may yet prove to be a blessing in disguise as the odds of us overcoming Saracens at the third time of asking were stacked firmly against us. Better that we put all our focus on the PRO12, a tournament we can win.

Which brings us nicely...

Our European season thus far has been full of ups and downs.

From the lows of two losses to Saracens (who are my favourites to win the tournaments outright) and our first half performance in the Alps against Oyonnax, to the highs of a brutal demolition of Toulouse at home, the bliss of beating them on their own turf and our second half performance at the Stade Charles Mathon, our boys have certainly kept us on our toes.

And now we’ve made it to the final weekend and, alas, our destiny is out...

You hear the old cliché that sport can be a game of two halves. If our game last week wasn’t a perfect example of that then I don’t know what is!

Perhaps it is better that the first half be consigned to the history books and never spoken of again. There will have been a very painful video review for the players to do earlier in the week and there will have been a bit of soul-searching done too. But that second half performance was top drawer – not too many teams are able to reverse a...

Sometimes a shock to the system is required.

We got one last Saturday with our defeat to Munster. In the end we couldn’t find the way around them that we needed and, to be perfectly honest, Munster probably deserved in the end purely for their passion in defence and their ability to close out the game masterfully. Credit Ian Keatley for taking his points when they were on offer.

Strangely we didn’t play all that badly, it was simply that a pass didn’t stick here or a kick fell a fraction...

We left it late, but the bandwagon rolls on.

In some ways taking the win from a game that was meandering its way to a respectable 3-3 draw is just as satisfying as doubling Toulouse, it showed that we have the mental fortitude to hang in there right until the end and effect the smash and grab and take all four points. Not too many teams will take four points from a ground as hostile as the Galway Sportsground so although it was low scoring, do not underestimate how important that win is.

If we were happy last weekend, we’re ecstatic this weekend!

A lot has been made of the demise of Irish provincial rugby after Leinster’s early exit (now mathematically confirmed) and Munster’s inability to pick up a point from their two games against Leicester. But amongst their failings we have produced two brilliant performances to dispose of one of the top sides in France both home and away and take a huge step towards the quarter-finals. And say what you want about Toulouse’s...
