Rory Best will miss the 09-10 seasonRORY BEST TO MISS THE 09-10 RUGBY SEASON

By Lyndsey Irwin

Ulster Rugby is today coming to terms with the news that Captain and Hooker Rory Best will miss the 2009-10 season due to injury...Following recent pain and subsequent medical investigation, it has been discovered that Rory is suffering from an underlying, chronic disc injury on his neck which requires surgery and a lengthy recovery period of between 9 and 12 months, and consequently the Ulster Captain will miss the 09-10 season.
Ulster’s Operations Director David Humphreys commented;

“Obviously losing Rory at the start of the season is a huge blow for us, not only is he our No. 1 hooker but also our captain and one of the most experienced players in the squad. However, what is most important is Rory’s long term health and welfare and there’s no reason not to expect him to return fully to rugby, post surgery and rehabilitation, next season.”

“The timing of this injury presents difficulties as most players are contracted for the 09-10 season. While we strengthened our hooking options this summer with the signing of Andy Kyriacou, we are working at present to find a replacement for Rory within world rugby.”

Rory, who was recently married, intends to take some holiday time prior to surgery to come to terms with his injury,. At present the date for the operation has not been set.

Andy Titterrell (ex-Gloucester) and Matt Cairns (ex-Sarries) are unattached...

This is an unmitigated disaster. We do not have another leader within our ranks.

We may be looking at Justin Fitzpatrick starting because he's Captain, when ideally he would be taking a backseat to Court this year.

Can David Pollock Captain Ulster when he returns from injury?

Thank god we signed Kyriacou.

Awful news for Ulster, and also for Ireland as Flan is pretty injury prone too. Good job we signed the Kyriacou all right.

Best wishes to Rory for the surgery and for a speedy recovery, not only is he Ulster's leader but one of the games best ambassadors and one of life's gentlemen.

Ferris captain anyone?

So Rory Best is out for the season, Horua isn't coming and Reggie Corrigan is off to coach the Leinster scrum!

And all before the very first competitive game of the season. Some teams have all the luck, eh?

This presents B McL with a massive challenge before any competitive rugby has even been played. This is a huge setback for Ulster and I just hope this doesn't affect the team's already fragile confidence before the season even begins. The big question is now who will take the captaincy for this year?

Hope Rory fully recovers soon.

Massive set back for Ulster and the already small squad is now one less. Best brother are not having the best luck with serious injuries. I would go for Andy Titterrell . He also can operate as a 7 in emerganices as well so may make a good bench player. Ferris for captain.

Yes Titterall is a decent wee player at club level, versatile too but throwing can be a bit off at times.

Ulster's Best misses full season

Ulster captain Rory Best has been ruled out for the entire season because of a neck injury.

The loss of the Ireland hooker is a massive setback for the province and new coach Brian McLaughlin.

It has been revealed that Best has a chronic disc injury which needs an operation with a recovery period of between nine and 12 months.

"This is a huge blow us. Rory is one of our most experienced players," said Operations Director David Humphreys.

"But what is most important is Rory's long-term health and welfare, and there is no reason not to expect him to return fully to rugby, after surgery and rehabilitation, next season.

"The timing of this injury presents difficulties as most players are contracted for the 2009-10 season.
